An introduction from founder director
Andy Matthews
Setting up O2PR in Cambridge in 2002 was no simple twist of fate. For some time I had felt that, despite the region's pre-eminent position in science and technology, there remained a lack of professional science communicators in the area. When the opportunity arose to set up my own firm, in my home town, I took it. Ten years on, O2PR continues to work exclusively with science and technology organisations, large and small, public and private, on a project and retained basis. At O2PR I am actively involved, day-to-day, in all client work . When extra resources or specialist knowledge is needed, I partner with individuals from an informal network of UK and overseas practitioners, all of whom I know well and have worked with over the years. We share the same commitment to client service and recognise that clients will continue to employ us only if we can deliver cost-effective results that go far beyond what they could realistically achieve themselves. This bespoke approach means that clients benefit from hands-on senior practitioner involvement on a daily basis and avoid the common pitfalls associated with larger, more generalist consultancies which can include: inexperienced account handlers, ever changing account teams and poor scientific credentials. Prior to O2PR, I spent over 15 years in London building, heading up and running science divisions for three of the UK's largest PR firms. During that time I directed many high-profile PR campaigns for public and private sector clients including GSK, Novo Nordisk, Wyeth Lederle, The Met Office, The Chemical Industries Association, Uniqema, The National Physical Laboratory, The Millennium Commission (major science projects) and the Dept for Business Innovation and Skills' National Measurement programmes. I was a founder member of the PRCA's Science & Technology Group and have been a member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations for 22 years. I am a past member of the Association of British Science Writers. A graduate in Industrial Chemistry from Brunel University, I cut my pre-PR teeth in technical services, industrial product marketing and development chemistry.
